Mont Blanc
This is my other all-time favourite beer. A French beer from the Savoie (Savoy) area, near Switzerland. Again, I thought I had never heard of it until I stayed in a hotel in a town called Megève in 2019, it was the only beer they had. I initially thought it was one of those local beers from a boutique brewery, then saw the label, that said that it had once been voted world’s best beer!
As it turned out, I had encountered it several years before, in 2012 but for some reason it didn’t leave much of an impression then. But when I had it in 2019 I was immediately smitten. Had one, then another, boy, was it good. Technically a pale ale, it’s light, refreshing, easy to drink in any weather or situation. Like Loburg, fairly hard to come by but can be bought on-line (at least here in France, not so anymore in Australia, as I discovered recently).
Have only ever had in bottles although I understand that it is available on tap.
They make several types but it’s only the Blonde that I like. If you ever get the chance to try it, absolutely do so.
5.8% alcohol which is a bit on the high side for me but not complaining.
I have tried the Blanche which is fine but I just don’t like that style of beer. For some reason it’s lower alcohol (4.7%). Also tried the IPA which is also 4.7%. Again, perfectly drinkable but I’m not an IPA fan.
They also made a Rouge and a Verte; I never thought I would try them but they came in a pack with a MB glass, so I ended up trying them after some months, and with some trepidation, as I have an aversion to beer that is of unnatural colour!
To my surprise the Rouge was quite good although not something I would seek out. The Verte was perfectly drinkable but just tasted nothing like beer!
The Blonde is a 9/10, the Blanche and the Rousse probably a 5 and the IPA maybe a 5.5
