IN SEARCH OF LOBURG BREWERY
As I’ve indicated here a few times, one of my two favourite beers is the Belgian beer Loburg. Because it’s hard to find, it has probably made it all that more alluring and I spend a good deal of time when visiting places in checking out the beers that various bars sell, to see if they sell Loburg.
We spent a week in Paris at Christmas time, and I knew from a previous stay in the Montmartre area that there is a bar that sells Loburg (called Au RDV de Montmartre). So naturally it was my first stop the first night there. Happy to report that (a) the bar was still there; (b) it was open; (c) they still sell Loburg and (d) it’s actually the cheapest beer they sell.
Because I have not been able to get to the bottom of where in Belgium the Loburg brewery is located, I asked a couple of people who are regulars at the bar if they knew or if the owner knows. Apparently they buy it through a distributer, and they have NFI about the brewery, they just like the beer and it apparently sells quite well.
So I am no closer to solving the Loburg mystery.
As an aside, one of the two regulars that I spoke to was drinking another Belgian beer called La Chouffe, quite a common beer although I haven’t seen it on tap in many places. I’ve had it once, in Ypres in 2014 and didn’t like it; the fact that it’s 8% is one reason but it’s just not to my taste. This bloke was waxing lyrical about it, says it’s his absolute favourite beer. I told him Loburg is one of my absolute favourites. Next time I was there he told me that he’s tried a Loburg and was disappointed! Not a patch on La Chouffe in his opinion. Just goes to show there are a lot of idiots in the world…..
