Maes

I come across this beer in quite a few places and it’s one beer that I’ve had both in bottles and à la pression.

It’s a Pils, brewed by the Alken-Maes brewery, located in the town of Waarloos in Belgium. Since 2008 it has been owned by Heineken. It is apparently, after Jupiler and Stella Artois, the third best-selling pilsner in Belgium.

Alcohol content is 5.2% which is OK for my taste. While it’s perfectly drinkable, it’s not one I would go out of my way to find; a little too bitter for my taste.

I rate the bottle version 5/10 and the draught version a bit higher at 5.5.

Bottled version in the garden in France, April 2022.

A la pression version at Le Relais de la Butte, Montmartre (Paris), June 2022

Latest sampling of this beer, in Paris December 2023. I’ve decided I was a bit harsh in my rating last time; it’s a better beer than I gave it credit for. Now rating it 7/10.
