Kronenbourg

1664 - the best of the Kronenbourg beers, and in the best manner to be enjoyed, à la pression, in Amiens, France, 2018.

1664s with mate at Chassignolles, France, 2019

Kronenbourg Tigre Bock at Brehemont, France, Aug 2021. Daughter with a Leffe….ugh.

A Kronenbourg that I had never heard of before, called 1947. Found it at a bar in a small town called Ancinnes, in Jul 2022.

My standard everyday beer, the basic Kronenbourg.

Kronenbourg - Standard /1664 / Tigre Bock / 1947

One of my very favourite French beers is the 1664. Probably the best-known and most readily available.

Brewery is located, as with the other beers I’ve written about, in Strasbourg in the Alsace area of France. It’s called 1664 because that’s when the brewery was established.

Technically a Pale Ale, 5% alcohol so middle of the range. A beer you can have several of and not feel bloated. Have had it in bottles and cans, and on tap. Great beer.

They make several varieties, including a Blanche which I don’t like, as well as a Pure Malt and a Christmas beer which I’ve never tried. They also make a 7.2% alcohol beer that I avoid like all high-alcohol beers. They also make, for some inexplicable reason, a alcohol-free version, as do a number of breweries. To my mind, they come under the heading of “why bother?”

A couple of years back I had something called Tigre Bock which is also one of their beers, but I haven’t yet discovered where it fits in. It’s 5.5% alcohol so a little stronger than 1664. Not as good as 1664 but perfectly drinkable. And then this year (2022) I discovered the 1947, exactly where it fits in is also a bit of a mystery. Not bad at all, probably on a par with the Tigre Bock.

I should mention that my standard, everyday beer is Kronenbourg’ s original version, slightly less alcohol content (4.2%) but still a great taste.

As far as ratings go, the 1664 I give an 8/10 and the others are on average about a 7.
