Augustiner
Have had two of their beers before but was reacquainted recently in a visit to Augustiner am Gendarmenmark in Berlin in August 2023 where we had dinner; as a side comment, I heartily recommend this place.
This is a Bavarian brewery by the way, not from northern Germany. It is also a bloody old one, claiming to date from 1328 !
So, their regular Hell (Lager) is 5.2% alcohol; light honey colour, good head, very refreshing.
Maybe it was the meal, or the venue, but I was mightily impressed with this one as was my drinking companion.
8/10
At the same time we also sampled the Augustiner Ededstoff which is marketed as an Exportbier. I have had this in bottled form several times before but never on tap. I had rated it very highly in bottled form (8/10) but my drinking companion and I were both very slightly disappointed, and felt it was inferior to their regular Hell. I rated it only 6/10 and I don’t want to record what my mate gave it.
A little while later we both sampled the bottled version and revised our rating, I reverted to the original 8/10 I had given it some time before and my mate even revised his rating upward. Not sure why we felt it was not so great on tap that night….
The Edelstoff is slightly higher alcohol content (58%); similar colouring etc as the regular Hell.
And just to round out the Augustiner section, I have also had in bottled form their Oktoberfest Bier. It’s stronger at 6.3% alcohol and in my opinion not as good as the other two.
Light colour, good head and very drinkable.
7/10
